Popular Archaeology published an article talking about 9th century wall paintings with numbers and calculations that are very much related to the Maya calendars. These mysterious painting, which I must mention are beautiful artwork, includes numerical records of lunar and possibly planetary cycles. The Mayas were really on to something here.

These paintings were found while excavating at the large, monumental Maya center of Xultun in Guatemala. The Mayas existed in large populations all over the Central American Region including Belize. “Tucked away under the dense vegetation of Guatemala's Peten region rain forest, the structure is theorized to be the house of a scribe with connections to the Maya king or royal family of Xultún.
"For the first time we get to see what may be actual records kept by a scribe, whose job was to be official record keeper of a Maya community," said archaeologist and expedition leader William Saturno of Boston University. "It's like an episode of TV's 'Big Bang Theory,' a geek math problem and they're painting it on the wall. They seem to be using it like a blackboard."”
Here is a video from National Geographic featuring the paintings. You can visit the Mayan ruins in Belize and learn of their history. Each era and each temple has an entirely different story. Some are believed to have ghost visitors and some hold very old stories of the lives and culture of the Mayas. Their descendants still inhabit the earth in large numbers.
