Lonely Planet, the world's leading publisher of travel guides and travel information, has just selected Belize as a top destination for travelers in 2017. In their report entitled "Best in Travel 2017: Best Value: Travel bargains for the budget-conscious," Lonely Planet ranked Belize as number six, highlighting the many attractions on offer for travelers including diving and snorkeling the Caribbean and touring ancient Maya ruins such as Caracol (spelled "Caraco" in the article). The Lonely Planet report also mentioned how Belize has "exceptionally good" value in its street food scene, allowing travelers to enjoy a wide gamut of delicious foods at very afforable prices.
In a separate article, the New York Times, one of the most widely read and respected newspapers in the United States, recently published their "52 Places to Go in 2017" article that included Belize. With a focus on the golden sands of the Placencia Peninsula in southeastern Belize as the epicenter of a growing eco-tourism movement, the New York Times article encouraged visitors to dive with whale sharks or relax with trips to a juice bar, yoga studio, or rum bar.
Visitors interested in traveling to Belize in 2017 will have a number of new options thanks to a recent announcement by Southwest of the addition of yet another non-stop flight from the United States to Belize. According to Southwest's official announcement on their website, the airline will begin operating a non-stop flight between Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Belize City starting on June 4, 2017, with one-way fares beginning at $79. The new route will join Southwest's existing non-stop flights from Houston's Hobby Airport (HOU) and Dallas Love Field (DAL). In addition, Southwest has already announced that it will begin operating non-stop flights between the Denver International Airport (DEN) and Belize City beginning on March 11, 2017.
Southwest's new Fort Lauderdale to Belize route is expected to compete with American Airlines' existing routes connecting Miami to Belize.
